You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette

You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette is the ninth post in the Song of The Week series. This song is one of my favorite breakup songs! If you grew up in the nineties and are female, you DEFINITELY know this song! I was ten years old when Alanis released her third studio album called Jagged Little Pill. Head Over Feet & You Learn were the only songs I knew when I bought the CD. But I am someone who loved to buy CDs and just discover new songs. I have said this many times before: My taste in music is different. It is an acquired taste.

I remember carrying this album with me everywhere I went. The guy who sold the CD to us said it was bad & we would not like it. Well, I love the entire work of art! It has sold over thirty million copies worldwide! Now maybe more than that, but it is one of the best albums I have ever heard.

You Oughta Know is the classic angry-chick-breakup-anthem.

The way the song begins on the album, her tone of voice, you can hear, “Uh-oh! Someone is MAAADDDDD!”

I want you to know that I’m happy for you; I wish nothing but the best for you both.

If ‘happy’ means, “I wish you two get run over by a truck,‘ then yeah, she is happy for her ex and his new love. These two lines she sings fairly even, in a somewhat calm (but still angry) voice. Then… she goes full-on angry-bitch-mode.

An older version of me? Is she perverted like me? Would she go down on you in a theatre? Does she speak eloquently? And will she have your baby? I’m sure she’ll make a really excellent mother.

These are some of the questions we, the brokenhearted ex-girlfriends, ask ourselves when our fuckwad exes leave us for another woman. Some women do really want to know if the other woman is ‘better’ than her. It is logical because your self-esteem takes a big hit when your boyfriend leaves you for someone else.

Please, I really want to share other parts of the song that I LOVE!

Did you forget about me, Mr. Duplicity? I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner. It was a slap in the face, how quickly I was replaced. And are you thinking of me when you fuck her? Cuz the love that you gave that we made wasn’t able to make it enough for you to be open wide, no. And every time you speak her name, does she know how you told me you’d hold me until you died, til you died, but you’re still alive!

And last, but not least…

And every time I scratch my nails down someone else’s back, I hope you feel. Well, can you feel it?

I like the album version better, so click here if you are interested in listening to that one. Rumor has it that this song is about one of her exes, but she never denied nor confirmed it. No idea who it is about, but what I know for sure is this: It is the best breakup song EVER!

I am grateful & blessed to have the life I live. (Soon to be) Traditionally published & self-published author in her mid-thirties. I unsuccessfully tried changing this picture numerous times, so I just left it. I wish you lots of love & may you get what you need. <3
