光年之外 – Song Of The Week [Chinese Edition]

光年之外 (guāng nián zhī wài) is one of my favorite Chinese songs. This week it is the new Song Of The Week. I think I came across this song in 2019, just do not ask me when. When learning a foreign language, it helps to learn songs in said language. Throughout my time in China, I did not listen to many Chinese songs, just the ones I accidentally heard. For example, if I was in a salon doing my hair or in a coffee shop not drinking coffee but tea. That is also how I first heard 光年之外 (guāng nián zhī wài), I just do not know where I was at the time.

The singer is a beautiful Hong Kong female who calls herself G.E.M., which means ‘Get Everybody Movin.’ In Chinese, it is 邓紫棋 (Dèng Zǐqí).

In 光年之外, you really hear the love the two people have for one another through G.E.M. her voice.

Which two people am I talking about? They are Jennifer Lawrence & Chris Pratt their characters in the movie Passengers.

I like the movie; I think I will watch it again after I finish this post. Learning Chinese is as fun as it is a challenge. Songs help, except if they are sung by 周杰伦 (Jay Chou). He has a horrible accent. Though he has great songs, he has an atrocious accent. Really, do not listen to his songs hoping to improve your pronunciation.

The English translation of this song is ‘Light Years Away.’ It is a love song, you can hear it in her very emotional way of singing. She has an amazing voice & she is talented. I think I might listen to some of her other work when I feel like it. G.E.M. has a great voice, which is not something that can be said of all singers nowadays.

If you are learning Chinese and would like to expand your vocabulary, I recommend this song.

Her accent is spot-on, and her voice is so angelic. I hope you enjoy this love song because this one is also on REPEAT and on my ‘forever playlist.’ Click on the button below for the lyrics in both Chinese characters, Pinyin, and with the English translation below. Enjoy!
